  • Norwegian Sky

    Norwegian Sky
    August 1-4, 2008
Balcony 0215 (Norway Deck) Deck 10

I took my mother in law and 2 year old son on the Norwegian Sky for a short weekend getaway. My mother-in-law had a cruise credit that was due to expire, so this sailing came in handy--and my son sailed free under their Kids' Free promotion.

Embarkation: We pulled into the port, dropped off our luggage and then parked in the parking garage for $20 a day!
There was no line at all, we got right up to the counter and were on the ship in a matter of minutes.

    Onboard:
We were given a free glass of champagne upon entering the ship. They had an escort take you inside which was a nice touch.
We were told staterooms would be ready by 2pm, so we went to the Garden Cafe to eat. The buffet was the smallest I have seen at sea yet. They prepared hamburgers for you by request, so I had a cheeseburger and got Spencer (my 2 year old) a hotdog and fries. The other food didn't appeal to me. It was tofu, sausage and peppers, rice, and fried fish of somekind--but was not that tasty. Spencer did have a few bites before going back to his hot dog.
No one came to ask what drinks we wanted. We had to walk outside to the bar for any sodas or cocktails. They did have a tea and juice machine at the buffet. At least one of the machines was out of order for most of the time.

After lunch we toured the ship and registered Spencer for the Kids Club. Norwegian Cruise Lines does have a room for 2 year olds. I just had to take a beeper with me. They don't change diapers!! LOL!

Our stateroom was nice. It did have a couch, which turned into Spencer's bed at night!! This was nice to have. Instead of a sliding glass door to the balcony, the Sky has a wall with a porthole, and a door that opens to the balcony. The bathroom was the regular size. There was enough closet space for us. We had a mini-fridge and a safe!

Our first dinner was in the Palace Restaurant, one of the two main dining rooms. I have to say the appetizers were excellent, but the main courses were not that great. The only exception was lobster night!! I got a really good lobster tail!

We did not eat in the specialty restaurants, except Il Adagio. It does serve free pizza and pasta for lunch!! It was excellent.

Our first stop was Nassau on Saturday. We just did some shopping then returned to the ship.
Our second stop was Great Stirrup Cay on Sunday. When I woke up, I pulled the curtains from our balcony to see the Sovereign of the Seas out our starboard side. I didn't realize Coco Cay and Great Strirrup Cay were next to each other!

I was not impressed with Great Stirrup Cay. After having been to Coco Cay and Princess Cays, this was a big disappointment.
The beach was very small and they had only one row of lounge chairs, the other rows were those very small chairs that are big enough for a 5 year old. They did not have any umbrellas either.
The water was perfect though!! We spent a few hours swimming and playing tag with a sting-ray that didn't want to leave me alone. I finally rented a huge round float for the three of us, so I wouldn't have to avoid the sting-ray any longer.

Saturday night the Sky held it's White Hot Party. Spencer isn't into dance parties yet, so we just hung out for a short while.

Overall, we had a great time. This was a great ship to take Spencer on. The kids' splash pool was a good size, the staff in the Kids' Club was excellent and our cabin stewards (Michael & Voltaire) were the BEST!!

  • Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas

Today, Royal Caribbean delivered the WOW when they revealed more details on it's newest cruise ship currently being built--Oasis of the Seas.
This giant ship can hold 5400 guests at double capacity and will have some of the most incredible sights at sea.
Among the new innovations is Boardwalk. Families can take a step back in time to the nostalgic seaside piers of yesteryear. Boardwalk will include the first amphitheater at sea, AquaTheater, a carousel, a candy store and a fortune teller.
Another area that is a first as sea is Central Park. Live trees and plants will line the walkways. Guests will also be able to stroll through the new Promenade. Twice the length of Royal Caribbean's other Promenades, it is the length of a football field.
The introduction of 28 contemporary two-level lofts will feature spectacular views of the ocean with floor-to-ceilings.
When she launches in late 2009, Oasis of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship in the world.
She will have 16 decks and feature 2700 staterooms. Oasis of the Seas will sail from her home port of Port Everglades, Florida and offer Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries.
Bookings open September 3, 2009. Call Beck Tours & Travel to book your cruise on this exciting and revolutionary cruise ship.
